Experience C.S. Lewis’ wonderful books through the eyes of an author dedicated to making classic literature accessible and engaging for all.

Surprised by Joy is C.S. Lewis’s autobiographical account that traces his journey from atheism to Christianity. Lewis describes his early years as filled with a longing for a profound sense of joy, which he encountered in moments of literature and nature but could never fully grasp. He explores his academic pursuits, friendships, and philosophical musings that led him through skepticism and despair. Ultimately, Lewis finds this elusive joy in the Christian faith, concluding that it was a pointer to something greater beyond this world—a realization that transforms his understanding of life and God.

The author has carefully updated British idioms and vocabulary for North American and international audiences.

As C.S. Lewis came to realize, joy can only be experienced ‘in the moment’. This book is a most enjoyable read. Additionally, Harrison explains many of Lewis’s use of British idioms in the footnotes. Well done!
