On the morning that changed history, Jesus entrusted the first announcement of His resurrection to a group of women. Yet nearly two thousand years later, Christians still wrestle with a difficult question: What roles did God intend women to have in His Church?

The Women Jesus Trusted approaches this often-divisive subject not by dismissing difficult passages, but by examining them within the whole sweep of Scripture. From creation and Deborah to Jesus’ remarkable interactions with women, from Pentecost and the women who worked alongside Paul to the challenging words, “Women should remain silent” and “I do not permit a woman to teach,” David O. This is not an argument for lowering biblical standards or allowing culture to rewrite Scripture. Nor does it pretend that every question has an easy answer. The question is not whether women are gifted. Scripture makes that abundantly clear. The harder question is:

For generations, women have been taught—sometimes explicitly and sometimes through the quiet messages woven into church life—that they occupy a lesser place in the kingdom of God. We have been told, in countless ways, that God loves us, but that He has entrusted leadership, authority, teaching, decision-making and spiritual significance more fully to men. We have been taught to accept a smaller space, to speak more softly, to defer more readily, and to understand our limitations as though those limitations were God’s design.

Sadly, many women have paid a heavy price for believing that they are somehow less to God than men are. Some have questioned their gifts, their calling, their voice, and even their place within the church.

I find this deeply troubling and, at times, profoundly sad.

When I turn to Scripture, I encounter a Jesus who saw women, invited them, included them, taught them, valued them, trusted them, and commissioned them to “go and tell.”

The Women Jesus Trusted invites us to look again—not first at what centuries of church tradition have said about women, but at what Scripture actually says about them. David does this by revisiting both the Old and New Testaments and examining them not simply through the lens of traditional male authority, but through the character and example of Jesus.

David’s careful and thorough exploration of Scripture points us back to the Jesus we still follow—and the Jesus we are called to imitate.
