When I first read Mere Christianity, I couldn’t help but ponder if the average North American reader could fully grasp the essence of this book without an English-to-”English” dictionary at their side. I even found myself Googling the meaning of some of Lewis’s colloquialisms from the 1940s. This led me to create what is now an Amazon ‘Best Seller,’ Mere Christianity in Everyday English.

Since then, I have found that some who consider themselves purists and fans of C.S. Lewis yet might wish for an ‘Americanized version’—such as this. Specifically, the original text has been updated to reflect North American spelling. Additionally, the longest paragraphs, which could easily span two or three pages, have been broken down into more digestible sections. To preserve the original context, phrases such as ‘any one’ have been maintained, rather than being shortened to ‘anyone.’ Likewise, Lewis’ original punctuation has been carefully preserved.
